Glaucoma is a general term used to describe a group of diseases that damage the nervous tissue of the eye resulting in vision loss and potential blindness. Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is one of the main risk factors in developing the disease, but there are many glaucoma patients that have relatively normal IOP. Other risk factors include age, race, and family history. Like other slowly developing eye diseases, glaucoma can cause significant, irreversible damage before the patient notices anything is wrong with their vision. A comprehensive eye exam will reveal any risk factors, and our doctors are highly experienced in the diagnosis and management of the disorder. In its early stages, glaucoma is effectively treated with topical drops that lower the IOP. In some cases; drops are not enough and the pressures must be lowered by a surgical procedure.
